ITINERARY
Day 1 Kelk Creek & Cape Leveque
The Dampier Peninsula is a delightful blend of
pristine beaches, dramatic coastlines and traditional Aboriginal
culture. Travelling up the red 4WD track, we head straight for Beagle
Bay Aboriginal Community, home of the Sacred Heart Church and its
glimmering pearl shell altar, for morning tea. Further north, we
discover Kelk Creek Bush Retreat, where our Aboriginal guide Deborah
Sibosado and her family introduce us to their traditional Bardi
'saltwater country'. A fascinating leisurely guided bushwalk offers an
in-depth insight into their Indigenous lifestyle and culture while the
freshly made damper and billy tea at the end of the walk is well worth
the wait!
After a delicious lunch we travel to beautiful Cape Leveque to set up
camp right on the edge of the Indian Ocean. A spectacular Kimberley
sunset is a great way to end the day, before our famous Kimberley BBQ
under the stars.
Day 2 Cape Leveque
The day at Cape Leveque is yours to enjoy as you
please. You may like to join our guide on a snorkelling or fishing
adventure (included), or take up one of the many optional extras on
offer including embarking on an Indigenous sea kayaking adventure,
hiring a dinghy or splurging on a scenic flight across the archipelago
and horizontal falls. Alternatively you may prefer to spend your time
simply enjoying the pristine beaches and rugged red coastline that Cape
Leveque is famous for. Whether you like swimming, snorkelling,
sunbathing or long walks along the beach, Cape Leveque is a great way to
relax away a day.
Day 3 One Arm Point & Lombadina
After breakfast we journey to the One Arm Point
Community, perched on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. This is the
perfect place to view the spectacular Buccaneer Archipelago and witness
the huge tidal flows of the Kimberley. We visit the Community’s
aquaculture hatchery, complete with barramundi, pearl and trochus shell.
Travelling on, we reach the laid-back Lombadina Community, a beautiful
and welcoming community, which is home to a local craft shop and
interesting bush timber church. The challenging Kimberley terrain leads
us back to Broome, arriving at approximately 5.00pm. The evening is free
to enjoy Broome at your leisure.
Day 4 Windjana Gorge
Kimberley cattle and gorge country provides a
dramatic contrast to the Dampier Peninsula. To begin our journey into
this unique land lost in time, we enjoy morning tea at Willare Roadhouse
on the mighty Fitzroy River, visit the infamous Derby Prison Tree and
explore the fascinating Mowanjum Arts and Cultural Centre, studio of
many local Wandjina artists.
Travelling on up the Gibb River Road, we head for the adventure of the
Napier Ranges. Enjoy lunch at Windjana Gorge, before an afternoon trek
takes us deep into the heart of this majestic natural wonder, home an
abundance of local wildlife - freshwater crocodiles in particular! – and
indigenous bushtucker. As the sun sets, the gorge walls reflect a warm
red colour and flocks of corowas squawk overhead on their way home over
the Coolibah trees. Amongst it all, we settle in for an evening by an
open fire under the starry Kimberley night sky – you can’t get more
Australian than this!
Day 5 Tunnel Creek & Biridu Community
Spend the day with our local Bunuba guide for an
insight into the region’s Indigenous river culture. Tunnel Creek runs
through a remarkable cave, carved through a 350 million year old
Devonian reef system. Armed with a sense of adventure and a torch, we
explore the subterranean creek, searching for stalactites, secret caves,
sleeping bats and freshwater river life, while learning the legend of
Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who once used the cave as his
hideout. At the end of the cave, a pristine waterhole offers the chance
to enjoy a refreshing swim.
In the afternoon, visit Old Leopold Station and rarely seen rock art
sites, before heading to the guide's own remote Biridu Community for a
bushtucker dinner and memorable evening of Aboriginal stories round the
campfire. This privilege is a highlight of the trip.
Day 6 Geikie Gorge & Broome
Emerging from Biridu, we journey towards Fitzroy
Crossing to explore the spectacular Geikie Gorge. Nature carved this
spectacular 30m deep gorge between the Geike and Oscar Ranges during the
Devonian geological period. A fascinating 2 hour Aboriginal Heritage
Cruise (included) through the gorge provides both a perfect view of the
dramatic gorge walls, together with further insight into local
Aboriginal legends and traditions. Following lunch at the gorge, we
visit the old Fitzroy Crossing before our journey back to beautiful
Broome, arriving at approximately 6:30pm.
NOTE: This is a camping tour, while
accommodation in Broome will be either camping or backpacker
dormitory-style. An upgrade of Broome accommodation is available on
request or those wishing to book a hotel for the Wednesday night are
welcome to do so independently.
