HIGHLIGHTS

Gibb River Road, Derby Prison Tree, Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek, Fitzroy Crossing, Geikie Gorge Darngku Aboriginal Heritage Cruise

ITINERARY

Day 1 Windjana Gorge

To discover the heart and soul of this unique land we journey through the remote and beautiful landscape of the West Kimberley as our guide shares stories of local history, people and the environment. Following morning tea at Willare Roadhouse on the mighty Fitzroy River, we visit the infamous Derby ‘Boab Prison Tree’, and also the fascinating Mowanjum Arts and Cultural Centre, studio for many local Wandjina artists. Travelling on up the Gibb River Road, we head for the adventure of the Napier Range. Enjoy lunch at Windjana Gorge, before an afternoon trek takes us deep into the heart of this majestic natural wonder, home to an abundance of indigenous bushtucker and wildlife - freshwater crocodiles in particular! As the sun sets, the gorge walls reflect a warm red colour and flocks of corellas squawk overhead on their way home over the Coolibah trees. Amongst it all, we settle in for an evening by an open fire under the starry Kimberley night sky - this is an unforgettable Australian experience!

Day 2 Tunnel Creek & Biridu Community

Spend the day with our local Bunuba guide for an insight into the region’s indigenous river culture. Tunnel Creek runs through a remarkable cave, carved in a 350 million year old Devonian reef system. Armed with a sense of adventure and a torch, we explore the subterranean creek, searching for stalactites, secret caves, sleeping ghost bats and freshwater creek life, while learning the legend of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who once used the cave as his hideout. At the end of the cave, a pristine waterhole promises a refreshing swim. In the afternoon, visit Old Leopold Station and rarely-seen rock art sites, before heading to the guide’s own remote Biridu Community for a bushtucker dinner and memorable evening of Aboriginal stories round the campfire. This privilege is a highlight of the trip.

Day 3 Geikie Gorge & Broome

Emerging from Biridu, we journey towards Fitzroy Crossing to explore the spectacular Geikie Gorge, which nature carved between the Oscar and Geikie Ranges. The Darngku Aboriginal Heritage Cruise (two hours, included) provides a perfect view of the dramatic gorge, together with further insight into local Aboriginal legends and traditions. Following lunch at the gorge, we visit the old Fitzroy Crossing before our journey back into Broome, arriving at approximately 6:30pm.
